Termites are often called the “silent destroyers” — and for good reason. These tiny insects can hollow out wooden beams, floors, and furniture over months or even years without making a sound, leaving homeowners with devastating structural damage and repair bills running into lakhs. The worst part? Most people don’t know they have a problem until it’s already severe.
At Xpress Pest Control, we’ve helped thousands of homeowners across India tackle termite infestations. In this guide, we share the 10 most common warning signs that termites may already be living in your home.
1. Mud Tubes on Walls or Foundation
Subterranean termites build pencil-thin mud tubes (about 6mm wide) along walls, foundations, and wooden surfaces. These tunnels serve as protected highways between their underground colonies and the wood they’re eating. If you spot brown, dirt-like tubes on your exterior walls or near the base of doors, it’s a classic termite red flag.
2. Hollow-Sounding Wood
Tap on wooden surfaces throughout your home — floors, door frames, furniture legs, window sills. If the wood sounds hollow or papery rather than solid, termites may have eaten through the inside, leaving only a thin outer shell. This is one of the most reliable ways to detect active damage.
3. Discarded Termite Wings
Every year, typically after the monsoon season in India, reproductive termites (called alates or swarmers) fly out of their colonies to start new ones. After landing, they shed their wings — you’ll find small, equal-length wings in piles near windowsills, light sources, or vents. If you see these, a colony is either nearby or already inside your walls.
4. Frass (Termite Droppings)
Drywood termites push their droppings (called frass) out of small kick-out holes in the wood. These look like tiny wood-coloured pellets or fine sawdust. Finding small piles of this powdery material near wooden furniture, window frames, or door frames is a strong indicator of dry wood termite activity.
5. Tight-Fitting Doors and Windows
Termites produce moisture as they eat through wood, causing door frames and window frames to warp and swell. If your doors or windows have suddenly become difficult to open or close and there’s no obvious weather explanation, termite damage may be the cause.
6. Blistering or Bubbling Paint
Blistering paint that looks similar to water damage can actually be caused by termites inside the walls. The moisture they release gets trapped under paint, causing it to bubble or peel even in rooms that have never seen a water leak.
7. Sagging or Buckling Floors
Termite damage to floor joists causes floors to feel soft, springy, or to visibly sag or buckle. If certain sections of your flooring feel unstable or make unusual sounds when walked on, the structural timber underneath may be compromised.
8. Visible Termite Swarms
Seeing a large swarm of winged insects — especially around light sources at dusk — is one of the most visible signs. Termite swarms are often mistaken for flying ants. The key difference: termites have straight antennae, equal-length wings, and a broad waist, while ants have elbowed antennae, unequal wings, and a pinched waist.
9. Damaged or Crumbling Baseboards
Run your hand along skirting boards and baseboards. If they crumble easily, feel soft to the touch, or show visible tunneling patterns (like a maze etched into the wood), termites have been feeding on them. This damage is often most noticeable in older homes with solid wood trim.
10. Clicking Sounds from Walls
If you press your ear against a wall in a quiet room and hear faint clicking or munching sounds, it could be soldier termites banging their heads against wood to signal danger — or worker termites busily eating their way through your walls. This eerie sound is more noticeable at night.

What to Do If You Spot Any of These Signs
Do not spray store-bought insecticide into visible holes or mud tubes — this alerts termites to scatter and makes professional treatment harder. Instead:
- Do not disturb the mud tubes or damaged areas
- Note the location and take photos
- Call a licensed pest control professional immediately
- Ask for a thorough inspection of all wooden elements
At Xpress Pest Control, our certified technicians use advanced pipe reticulation termite treatment systems and government-approved chemicals to eliminate active colonies and protect your property from future infestations — both pre- and post-construction.
